Flax Seed Recipes: Hummus
When I was making the first video for Flax Seed recipes. Link Here I was thinking and speaking during that video about the versatility of Flax Seeds. I kinda spoke without thinking and blurted out Hummus!
Needless to say since the link for my Flax seed Hummus is here and the photo also I made a video making a flax seed hummus.
Hummus is very easy to make and the recipe is easy to remember. Basic hummus is chickpeas pureed with olive oil. There are a few other ingredients involved with this process also. Spices like cumin and coriander as well as salt and pepper. There is another ingredient that adds to the depth of flavor of a good hummus. That is Tahini.
Tahini is sesame seeds ground into a paste with the addition of seasonings and olive oil. During the Flax Seed video, I pondered using Flax Seeds to make the tahini. Here is what I did.
Flax Seed Tahini
1/2 cup Golden Flax Seeds (brown can be substituted)
1 teaspoon Whole Cumin seeds
1 teaspoon Whole Coriander seeds
1/4 cup Olive Oil (quantity is approximate)
Flax Seed Hummus
one 15 oz can of Garbanzo Beans
1 recipes worth of Flax Seed tahini
3 - 4 cloves Garlic (more if you like!)
1 teaspoon powdered dried Chilis (I used Ancho, Paprika can be substituted) (I also make this myself but you can buy pre-ground)
1/4 to 1/2 cup Olive Oil
Juice from 1 Lemon
Salt and pepper to taste
First step is to make the Tahini. We start by roasting the flax seeds. Since I was going to use the whole recipe for the hummus, I thought why not add the spices to be used in the hummus? I added the Cumin and Coriander to the pan to roast off also. I used my Cuisinart Air Fryer set to air fry at 300f. This only took about 5 minutes. I pulled them out when they started popping!
Let them cool a bit and throw them into the carafe of a blender. Pulse this a few times to start. Turn on the blender and slowly drizzle in the olive oil. This is the time to use the good olive oil. You will need about 1/4 cup. You may need more depending on how loose you want it.
Next we make the Hummus. The type of blender I used was not suited for this step so I switched to my food processor. I could have continued with the blender but I would have had to stop quite a few times to scrape down the sides and it will take a little longer to puree. I know I did this on one of my test runs!
In the food processor add everything but the additional olive oil. Like with the tahini pulse a few times to grind the ingredients up a bit. Now turn on your food processor and drizzle in the olive oil until you reach a consistency you like. Please note the quantity for the olive oil is approximate. You may want more or less depending on your taste. Finally check for seasoning. If you want more salt, pepper or powdered chilies, now is the time to add them.
I like serving this with veggies but pita is also good.
